How to Ensure Sustainability?

Sustainability is something that should be intertwined into all facets of life as the concept as a whole looks to adapt standard living conditions to encompass a more sustainable way of living. Sustainability refers to living our lives in such a way that we do not compromise the ability of future generations to live as we do and have access to the same resources. If we put the earth under too much pressure today and abuse the natural resources that we use, there may not be enough to sustain the generations to come. Living sustainably is incredibly important and as the world changes and looks to develop more ecological and environmentally friendly ways of living, we all need to ensure that we do our part.

What is The Importance of Sustainability in The Kitchen

What is The Importance of Sustainability in The Kitchen?

Sustainability is important in every facet of life and that includes when working in the kitchen. There are many different things that we can do to ensure that the equipment and products that we use when making food are more sustainable. Sustainability in the kitchen can help in many different ways and ensuring that you are coming up with ecological ways to produce food is an important part of this movement. When food is produced and cooked in a  sustainable way, it takes pressure off of the environment and can help to ensure that there is a better and safer tomorrow for future generations to come.

How to Ensure Sustainability in the Kitchen?

There are different things that we can do to ensure that we live a more sustainable life, particularly when it comes to sustainability in the kitchen. The following are just a few tips and tricks to ensure that your kitchen is as sustainable as possible!

Use Biodegradable Items

Biodegradable items are important to use as they can reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. These landfills pollute the environment and take up valuable space on the earth. With tons of non-biodegradable waste being discarded within these landfills and not degrading down into the earth, there are tons of materials that will remain here for the foreseeable future. Using biodegradable items will minimise the amount of waste that remains in these landfills as these products will eventually degrade and disappear. Sustainability can be easier achieved if all the items that we use are able to degrade as landfills could be a thing of the past!

Recycle and Compost

Recycling and composting food that is discarded is a great way to create your own fertiliser! Very often, food products are mixed in with standard rubbish and is then thrown into the same landfills where it will sit and waste away. These sustainable food products have important nutrients that can help provide the soil with nourishment, ensuring that other items can grow within it!

Practice Eco-Friendly Clean-Up

Using eco-friendly materials and discarding used items in a sustainable way is an important part of running an eco-friendly kitchen. There are different things that you can do and materials that you can use that can help ensure that cleaning your kitchen is not resulting in negative environmental impacts. One of the biggest things to consider are the chemicals and cleaning materials that you use. These harsh detergents often contain chemicals that are washed away into water streams, contaminating them and the environments that they are released into. By being more aware of the products that you are using, you can ensure that you are doing your part to create a better and more sustainable tomorrow!

Invest in Energy Star Appliances

Energy Star appliances are tools that use far less energy than others, reducing the impact that they have on the environment. The appliances that we use often use a ton of energy and electricity, and simply heating up an oven or turning on a microwave has a massive impact, even if we do not realise it. Energy Star appliances have been created specifically to reduce the impact that these kitchen appliances may have and consume far less power than others. Using them in your kitchen can help to save energy and reduce the impact that your kitchen activities have on the environment.

Invest in Stainless Steel Tools

Investing in stainless steel appliances when picking out the best additions to your kitchen can help to reduce the impact that they have on the environment. Not only are these appliances often longer lasting than other materials but they are also easier to recycle when they are no longer used or need to be replaced! Outfitting your kitchen with stainless steel tools is a way that you can contribute to your kitchen functioning more sustainably!

Use LED Lighting

LED lights use far less power compared to other bulbs and they have an increased power efficiency that can see a reduction of nearly 75% of the power needed to light the bulb! When it comes to sustainability in the household, Using LED lights in your kitchen is a great way to reduce your impact, and they can be used all over your house!

Use Reusable Kitchen Towels

Kitchen towels are standard staples in nearly any kitchen around the world. Many choose to use one time items, such as paper towels, when cleaning up their kitchen, simply using and discarding these items. Using reusable kitchen towels is both better for the environment and it can actually save you money! They are extremely easy to wash and can be thrown in the washing machine once a week to ensure that they remain clean and are able to keep your kitchen looking spotless!

Use Glass Storage Containers

Use Glass Storage Containers

Many people have taken to using plastic containers to store their food. This is not just something that is bad for the environment but it can actually have severe consequences on one’s health. Glass storage containers are a much better option when it comes to the storing of food products and they are actually far easier to clean and are not as easily stained as their plastic counterparts!
